How to find a suitable girl
Western culture typically paints weddings as times of joy, celebrating two people and their families joining together in a shared future. Yet it's easy to forget that marriage based on love is an extremely recent, and still mostly Western, phenomenon, as marriages were and often still are arranged in many parts of the world. The new documentary A Suitable Girl , on Amazon and iTunes in late March, follows three young women in India who seek to marry for very different reasons than seen often in America, and the film's look at the intersection of modern life and traditional belief is a must-see. In Mumbai, Ritu is concerned marriage will slow down her blossoming career, which in turn concerns her marriage-consultant mother who's pressuring her to settle down. In Dehli, Dipti, told by a matchmaker her search for love is impeded by her weight and looks, feels double the shame at herself for letting down her loving, doting family.SEE VIDEO BY TOPIC: A Suitable Girl

‘A Suitable Girl’ Documentary Paints Nuanced Picture of Arranged Marriage in India
By Nick Schager. For Ritu, however, the struggle is one between her wish to live a modern life of her own choosing, and the societal demand that she wed. That means cooking, cleaning, wearing constricting sarees, caring for parents-in-law, and forgoing any sense of identity in the process. In such a corrosive environment, where women are judged only by their looks and meekness, and men are deemed worthy by the size of their bank accounts, misery naturally reigns.

Traditional culture and contemporary sensibilities collide to paint a picture of the complex experiences of three modern Indian women in the documentary film A Suitable Girl , screening this weekend at the 3rd i Film Festival in Palo Alto. Directors Sarita Khurana and Smriti Mundhra profiled the journeys of Ritu, Diti and Amrita; three educated, urban middle class women navigating both personal and familial expectations surrounding marriage. While the lives of contemporary Indian women are as diverse as the subcontinent is vast, there remain some communities with seemingly old-fashioned holdouts when it comes to cultural values. When we meet Ritu, she is vehemently opposed to getting married. Later, Ritu appears to sag under the consistent pressure from her parents, and acquiesces to them finding her a match, but under no uncertain conditions.
Now, my biggest priority is the damage my bank account will have to handle and the nagging worry that married life might start with bad credit. Dipti has always put her career first—pushing for further education to gain her Masters before pursuing a job in the industry. She fears that holy matrimony will result in her loss of ambition and drive. She willingly flips through the local newspaper alongside her parents, browsing the advertisements and discussing the various characteristics of each potential groom. A visit from a shortlisted candidate, a brief question and answer session revolving around his favourite tea and his ideal woman, leaves her love-struck.
A Suitable Girl: An acclaimed documentary takes a look at arranged marriages in India
A searchable database of the laws, people, organizations, and litigation involved in sexual and reproductive health and justice in the United States. Marriage in India is so often either exoticized as a colorful, romantic Bollywood affair, or demonized as an antiquated, misogynistic injustice. Families range from being quite conservative to quite open, so young people go on dates a lot more before they make that final decision on their own, or sometimes with their families, too. Initially they set out to take more of a big-picture approach to the topic of marriage in India, following a matchmaker and exploring the process. But the three women they found were so open with them, and their stories so compelling, that they ended up focusing instead on their personal journeys. Her elderly father-in-law got sick shortly after she arrived, so rather than joining the family business, she stays home to help take care of him and the house. She and her parents are hard at work finding her a husband. She falls into a depression, not wanting to get out of bed.

In the United States, weddings are glorified as such fantastic events and signify the choice of two people who found each and fell in love. The documentary — directed, produced, edited, and completely made by women of color, an impressive feat in and of itself — follows three young Indian women in their pursuit of finding a man to marry, and how arranged marriages in the country are negotiated. Through their eyes, we see a close and personal examination of the complex journey Indian women face: They want to do right by their families by finding a good husband, but they don't want to lose themselves or relatives in the process.

To most Americans, the idea of arranged marriage seems foreign, old-fashioned and very patriarchal. After all, most modern and Western women believe they alone should decide who they want to spend the rest of their lives with. That said, we still carry a lot of misconceptions about what arranged marriage means for cultures that still practice it today. But it also shows the struggles that these educated women have when trying to negotiate their personal career goals alongside the traditional pressures to marry. The Frame's John Horn recently spoke with co-director Smriti Mundhra and producer Jennifer Tiexera about their seven-year journey to make this film.
How to explain the arranged marriage to non-Indians? How to explain that it coexists in India with modernization and call centers and that women who have the agency to study for an MBA and work full-time also fully participate in the arrangement of their own marriage? The film A Suitable Girl is a nuanced and keenly felt cinematic foray into the world of arranged marriage. Not Arranged Marriage with upper caps, as if a generic experience awaits all those who go down this path. Instead, for each of the three women who are followed around by a perceptive camera, there emerges a verite portrait of the complexities of emotions within the cultural context where such alliances are the norm.
